Question 2

Who needs to use DoneVAT?

Accepted Answer

Any UK VAT registered business. If your VAT taxable turnover is over £90,000 you must register for VAT. Below that you can register voluntarily. Either way, once you are registered, Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to you. DoneVAT is built specifically for VAT registered businesses.

Question 3

Is DoneVAT available to use now?

Accepted Answer

DoneVAT is in early access ahead of public launch. Get started and we'll email you the moment your account is ready.

Question 4

What happens if I miss a VAT return?

Accepted Answer

HMRC uses a points-based penalty system. Each late VAT return adds a penalty point, and once you reach the threshold - five points if you file monthly, four if quarterly, two if annually - a £200 penalty applies, with a further £200 for each late return after that. Late payment is penalised separately. DoneVAT tracks your VAT periods and keeps submissions to a single step.

Question 5

What is the best Making Tax Digital software for VAT?

Accepted Answer

DoneVAT is purpose-built for UK VAT registered businesses - not adapted from a general accounting tool. Log your sales and purchases, categorise them by VAT rate, check your nine boxes, and submit your VAT return directly to HMRC.

Question 6

When is my VAT return due?

Accepted Answer

One month and seven days after the end of each VAT period. If you use annual accounting, your one return is due two months after the end of your accounting year. DoneVAT takes your return dates from HMRC and tracks each deadline.
